When the messaging platform started its payment service, it was followed by NPCI’s permission of 2 crore users, followed by 4 crore users. Now after getting permission of 6 crore more users, this figure has increased to 10 crores for WhatsApp. That is, now WhatsApp can include 10 million users out of its 50 crore users in the payment service.
Whatsapp had been telling NPCI for years that India is the largest market for this and no limit should be set up to provide payment service to users here. In November 2021, NCPI increased the limit from 2 crores to 4 crores for WhatsApp payment service.
In 2020, NPCI gave a permission to WhatsApp to launch payment service. For many years, the company had been continuously trying to work in line with Indian regulations, including the terms of data storage. The Indian government wanted the company to store the data related to the payment on the local server. There is a lot of crowd in the Digital Payment Service sector in India. In India, WhatsApp competes with Alphabet’s Google Pay, Softbank and Ant Group Paytm and Walmart’s PhonePe Payment Services.
The comment about this development was not yet received by WhatsApp. However, NPCI confirmed this development in a statement to Reuters. This is a relief news for WhatsApp but its number of users is more than 50 crores. In this sense, even after the new limit, the development service of the platform can be developed only in a limited range.
