The Top 10 List
1. Spirited Away (2001)
Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning masterpiece. Chihiro, trapped in a bathhouse for spirits, must free her parents. The gold standard of imagination in cinema — anime or otherwise.
2. Your Name (2016)
Makoto Shinkai’s body-swap romance between a Tokyo boy and a small-town girl, racing against a comet and time itself. The highest-grossing anime film of its era, and still the easiest recommendation on this list.
3. Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)
Tanjiro and the Flame Hashira Rengoku face a demon aboard a speeding train. The biggest anime box-office phenomenon worldwide — pure visual fire with a heartbreaking core.
4. A Silent Voice (2016)
A former bully seeks forgiveness from the deaf girl he tormented. Naoko Yamada’s gentle, devastating film about guilt, friendship and learning to listen.
5. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Isao Takahata’s wartime story of two siblings in Kobe. One of the greatest films ever made — and one of the hardest to watch. Keep tissues ready.
6. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2021)
Yuta Okkotsu and his cursed childhood love, in a prequel that out-fights most of the series. A perfect entry point into the JJK world, no episodes required.
7. Princess Mononoke (1997)
Miyazaki’s epic of gods, forests and industry — morally complex, visually staggering, and proof that family films can ask adult questions.
8. Suzume (2022)
Shinkai’s road-trip fantasy across Japan, closing doors that disasters slip through. Gorgeous, funny and quietly healing.
9. The Boy and the Heron (2023)
Miyazaki’s dreamlike return — a boy, a talking heron and a tower between worlds. Strange, personal and Oscar-winning.
10. Weathering With You (2019)
A runaway boy, a girl who can pray away the rain, and Tokyo drowning in beauty. Shinkai at his most romantic and visually lush.
