Reign marked by a deep sense of service to the people – Times of India

LONDON: A statement from King Charles III issued by Buckingham Palace said, “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held. ”
Elizabeth II, loved, admired, revered and seen as an embodiment of Britishness, had been in good health for most of her life. But her health started to deteriorate a few months after the death of her husband, Prince Philip, who died aged 99 on April 9, 2021. When she ascended to the throne as Elizabeth II on the death of her father, King George VI, on February 6, 1952, she was queen of a retreating empire that she saw come apart during her time on the throne.
PM Jawaharlal Nehru attended her coronation on June 2, 1953. In 2015, she became the longest-reigning monarch of the UK since Queen Victoria, who had spent 63 years and seven months on the throne. Among her achievements was keeping the affection of the British people for royalty largely intact.
The late queen’s reign was marked by a deep sense of service to the British public. She was a steadfast pillar of British life and seen as an embodiment of Britishness. Yet, she was always humble and always put her country and duty first. She was a permanent fixture in most people’s lives here. Her absence will also be felt throughout the world.
The British people saw her as a source of strength and reassurance, someone who represented decency and duty, who avoided controversy. They loved watching her speech on Christmas Day and her speech at the outset of the pandemic, when Boris Johnson was taken to hospital, provided immense reassurance.
She was the head of state in the UK and in 14 other countries, including Australia and Canada, and the head of the Commonwealth, a body largely of her creation. That role has now been taken over by Charles, who will lead the nation in mourning. Earlier on Thursday, the queen’s immediate family members had rushed to Balmoral, her Scottish estate, after doctors had raised concerns about her health. In a very rare statement, Buckingham Palace had issued a statement just after 12. 30pm saying: “Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral. ”
