WhatsApp Opposed 84 Lakh Accounts Republic of India September 2024 Coverage Violations Experiences All Main points

WhatsApp banned more than 85 lakh accounts in India last month. The Meta-owned platform continuously bans suspicious and reported accounts and shares the information in its special reports. WhatsApp has said that it has banned more than 16 lakh accounts ‘proactively’, which means that these accounts were blocked before any user reported any policy violation. Earlier in the month of August also, the platform had banned more than 84.58 lakh accounts. WhatsApp says it detects abuse at three stages of account lifecycle, first at the time of registration, second during messaging and third in response to negative feedback.

WhatsApp in India bans millions of accounts every month in compliance with information technology. In its latest (November) report, the platform said that in the month of September it banned 8,584,000 accounts. The platform said that 1,658,000 of these accounts were proactively banned before any complaints from users.

According to the social media platform’s monthly compliance report under the new IT Rules 2021, WhatsApp received 8,161 complaints from the country and the records of “actioned” were 97, which means WhatsApp took remedial action. WhatsApp also said that it received two orders from the Criticism Appellate Committee in the country and both were complied with.

While WhatsApp allows its users to report accounts, the platform also uses an on-platform abuse detection system that can proactively detect policy violations. As per existing rules, WhatsApp receives complaints from users through email sent to grievance_officer_wa@help.whatsapp.com and through mail sent to India Grievance Officer by post.

Let us tell you that between August 1, 2024 and August 31, 2024, 8,458,000 WhatsApp accounts were banned. At that time the platform had said that 1,661,000 of these accounts had been proactively banned.
