Citing an anonymous government worker by the news agency PTI, it was reported that TRAI’s previous recommendations on Internet Telefony were not accepted by DOT, after which a comprehensive reference was sought on Internet Telefony and OTT service providers, which allow users to call and send messages on the Internet.
TRAI earlier said that there is no need to regulate OTT service, and Dot last week sought new recommendations from TRAI due to the changing environment with new technology. At that time, TRAI recommended that Internet Service Providers (ISP) could provide internet telephony to call the phone network, if they paid the interconnection fees as per report and set up a valid interception aquapment.
The government has not yet officially announced a plan to regulate the OTT service provider.
Significantly, TRAI has been facing pressure from telecom operators for many years regarding the regulation of OTT players in the country. Telecom companies have argued that these service should pay license fees and be subject to equal rules related to valid interception and service quality.
