Whatsapp Bans Over 45 Lakh Indian Accounts in February

Messaging service WhatsApp has banned more than 45 lakh accounts in India in February. WhatsApp banned 29 lakh accounts in January. In February, more than 12 lakh WhatsApp accounts were banned before receiving any report from users.

The monthly report released by META owned WhatsApp has said that in February, 45,97,400 WhatsApp accounts have been banned. “The user safety report is aware of the complaints received by the users and the action taken by the users to deal with the harassment on their platforms, with the WhatsApp spokesperson said. We are aware of the steps taken by WhatsApp to deal with harassment. Under the stringent IT rules implemented last year, large digital platforms with more than 5 million users have to publish the Compliance Report each month. In this report, these platforms have to inform about the complaints received and the action taken on them.

Social media firms have faced opposition due to hate speech, misinformation and fake news on their platforms. Such fears were expressed that these platforms are banning many users along with removing the content unilaterally. The Central Government had launched the arrangement of the Grives Appellate Committee (GAC). In this, users can file their complaints on a portal against the decisions of social media firms.

The problem of unwanted or spam calls may soon be solved on Whatsapp. A feature can be introduced in this app used around the world, so that such calls can be silent. This messaging service is based on phone numbers and a person can call another registered user despite not being saved as a contact in his address book. Wabetainfo, who tracked new features on WhatsApp, had said that the new beta version of WhatsApp includes codes for such features so that users will be able to silence the calls from unknown numbers. However, the new feature has not been finalized and is being developed.
