AWACS: ‘Eyes’ flying in the sky
AWACS means Airborne Ultimatum and Keep An Eye on Machine, there is an aircraft that monitors enemies, missiles and drones flying in the sky. This system can detect hundreds of kilometers away activities with 360 degree coverage. AWACS aircraft have powerful radar and communication equipment, which play an important role in command and control during the war.
Pakistan’s AWACS fleet: Saab 2000 Erieye and ZDK-03
Pakistan Air Force has two major AWACS systems, Sweden’s Saab 2000 Erieye and China’s ZDK-03 Karakoram Eagle. The Saab 2000 Erieye has an AESA radar, which can detect the target at a distance of 450 km. The system provides real-time data to fighter jets like JF-17 of Pakistan, which increases their firepower. The ZDK-03 is also a powerful AEW & C platform, which further strengthens Pakistan’s aerial monitoring capabilities.
India’s answer: Operation Sindoor
According to NDTV, recently India killed an AWACS aircraft in Pakistan under ‘Operation Sindoor’. This action was taken by Pakistan in response to drone and missile attacks in Indian regions. The Indian Air Force used advanced air defense systems like S-400 and Barak-8er in this attack. This operation has shocked Pakistan’s aerial surveillance and command capabilities.
