NPCI has started this in association with IDFC First Depot and Transcorp World Restricted under the guidance of Service Reserve Bank of India (RBI). NPCI said that the visitors who visit the country with UPI One Global Wallet will be able to make digital payments safely to the merchants of the country. In this, foreign travelers and NRI will have to download a prepaid payment instrument-UPI app. With this, they will be able to make payment through scanning the QR code of merchants using their smartphone camera.
This service can be used for online shopping and travel booking along with merchants and hotels. UPI is also being exposed rapidly abroad. Recently this QR based service was launched in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). For this, NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) has tied-up with Community World. UPI payments can be made through more than two lakh point-off-cell (POS) terminals of Network International in UAE. NIPL said that this will make Indian tourists and NRIs scan only by scanning the QR code in UAE. It will be accepted at Mall of Emirates, Dubai Mall and other retail stores.
There are more than 60,000 merchants in retail, hospitality, transport and other sectors with network international. Digital payments have increased rapidly since the start of UPI. With this, users can easily transfer payments from their smartphones. According to RBI data, the value of transactions made from UPI in the last two years has increased by about 137 percent to about Rs 200 lakh crore. This payment service has also been started in Sri Lanka and Mauritius.
