There’s a new CSK captain: MS Dhoni on ‘muscle memory’ of reacting to dropped catches

MS Dhoni explained why he doesn’t come up with animated reactions to drop catches in Indian Premier League matches, noting that new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is quite similar to him in terms of keeping his composure on the field. MS Dhoni, at a promotional event, had to remind the anchor that he is no longer the captain of the Chennai Super Kings when he was quizzed about his reaction to a dropped catch from Rachin Ravindra in their second match of the IPL 2024 season against Gujarat Titans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday.

Rachin Ravindra, who was bought for Rs 1.8 corer in the IPL auction in December, has been a steal for the Super Kings as the New Zealand all-rounder has given blazing starts to the team after having been entrusted with the responsibility of opening the batting alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad in the absence of Devon Conway.

Rachin Ravindra has not put a foot wrong so far in the yellow jersey. However, there was a rare blip on Tuesday when he dropped a catch of Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan in the 15th over of the visiting team’s unsuccessful chase of 208. It was in Matheesha Pathirana’s over that Rachin, running back from extra cover, dropped the catch.

“When you missed the catch, did you look at MS? How did he react, what did he tell you?” the anchor asked the young New Zealand all-rounder.

“Well, there’s a new captain,” MS Dhoni intervened.

“It (muscle memory) is there. But, I am not somebody who reacts a lot, especially when somebody is playing his first game or second game. I think Rutu (Ruturaj) is quite the same. But it was fun to watch him (Rachin) move all round the ground,” Dhoni added.

Rachin Ravindra has been good on the field too as he set the tone for the Super Kings in their season opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, taking a diving catch to dismiss Faf du Plessis.

Chennai Super Kings are on top of the points table after having won both their matches in the IPL 2024 season so far. The Super Kings have looked clam and composed under their new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has handled the burden of expectations well so far.

Nonetheless, MS Dhoni has not walked out to bat yet even as fans were eagerly anticipating his cameo when the Super Kings posted 207 against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday.

The Super Kings will next face Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam in their first away game of IPL 2024 on Sunday, March 31.
