Basically, WiFi’s signal can be blocked walls, metal, electronics and even furniture. But the good thing is that with the help of some easy Hax you can make your existing router more efficient, without purchasing any new gadgets. Try the 5 tricks below and see the difference yourself.
1. Change the location of the router, keep it in the center, not in the corner
Wifi signals spread around like radio waves. If your router is placed in one corner of the house, half of its signal is wasted and the rest reaches the house weak. Keep it in a place that is in the center of the house, open space and at a higher height.
Pro tip: Putting a router on the table or wall mount is more effective than keeping it near the floor.
2. Keep away from metal and electronic items
If the router has a microwave, fridge, TV, or large mirror, the signal can weaken. Things like metal and glass can reflect or block Wifi signal. Where the walls are low, there are low walls and there is no crowd of electronic devices.
3. Change the channel of the router manually
WiFi router usually chooses a channel itself. But if many people around you are using the same channel, then there can be interfaces. This means speed slow, connection drop and buffering. Log in the router settings (go to the browser to 192.168.1.1 or as your model is IP) and replace the channel setting from “Auto” to Channel 1, 6 or 11. These three channels do not overlap together.
4. Restart the router once a week
Most people keep the router on continuously for a month-two months, causing its performance to fall slowly. A simple restart, even once a week, clears the router’s memory, stabilizes the signal and often improves speed.
Pro tip: If you want, use a programmable socket that resets automatically power once a week.
5. Apply Repeater or Wifi Extender (when everything else fails)
If your house is very large or has several floor, then just changing the location will not work. In such a situation, use a Wifi Repeater or Extender. These are small devices that catch signals from the router and pass forward, causing the dead zone cover. First you check in every corner of the house where there is a signal week, after which see where the signals are the most strog and put the Extender there.
Nowadays, recipes of good brands are available for Rs 1,000-2,500, which is also easy to set, just put it in a socket and setup easy.
