Indian -origin astronaut Sunita Williams is stuck in the international space station in space these days. Sunita, along with her fellow crew members, celebrated her new year at the International Space Station (ISS). But not once but 16 times! Yes, Sunita Williams saw the sun rising and setting up 16 times on the day of the new year while staying in space. This unique opportunity to welcome the new year got Sunita Williams and the crew members living with them.

This opportunity for NASA astronauts was no less than a dream. While crores of people on Earth welcomed the new year only once, Sunita Williams did this 16 times in ISS. A posted on the X was posted by the space station, which said, ‘2024 is going to end now, the Exp 72 crew will enter the new year and see 16 sunrise and sunset. Many photos of the sunset have been taken from the class outpost here in the last few years.

Sunita Williams Expedition is the commander of the 72 mission, including her partner Alexi Ovichinin, Buch Wilmore, Ivan Wagner, Don Petit, Alexander Gorbunov and Nick Heg. In fact, the reason for seeing 16 sunrise is related to ISS circling the Earth’s orbit.

The International Space Station completes about 15.5 rounds of the Earth a day. It revolves around the Earth at an average speed of 28 thousand kilometers per hour. It exists 400 km above the surface of the Earth. It takes 90 minutes for the space station to take a round of the earth. Sunita Williams left for the Boeing Starliner Space Craft in June for this mission. He was to return after 8 days. But due to technical disturbances, this mission became longer. Now Sunita Williams will return to Earth in March 2025.
