In a post on Google Play Games Console Support website, the company recently announced that it is updating various policies including accessories, or application programming interfaces. The accessibility API used by apps designed to help disabled users on Android is also used by several popular apps on the Play Store, including ACR phones and Trurecaller to provide call recording functionality. The company has stated in the post that “accessibility APIs have not been designed (for call recording) and remote call can not be requested for audio recording,” the new policy will be applicable from May 11.
One of the apps using accessibility API for call recording on Android phone, the developer of ACR Telephone tried to explain how to affect the third party call recording apps. With the release of Android 10, Google had banned all applications (including call recording apps) from the microphone of the device (including call recording apps) from the microphone of the device to recording audio during calls, to protect users’ privacy and follow call recording laws worldwide. The developers started requesting accessibility APIs to maintain the call recording functionality on the phone on Android 10 or subsequent phones.
According to Google’s new policy, apps requesting accessibility API to record the call will have to stop doing so by May 11. This means that users who are running on the new version of Android 10 or Google’s operating system will no longer be able to record the call using a third-party application. However, users of special tools and select regions may be able to record calls using the built-in dialer app. According to a comment by the ACR phone developer, this is because system apps or Google apps can access Voice_Call audio sources on Android phone.
