According to Canalys Research, Landfil Waste (Garbage) will increase in large numbers due to the closure of support for the Home Windows 10 operating system. The report claimed that this decision of Microsoft Corporation may cause around 240 million personal computer (PC) disposes. The weight of electronic waste coming out of these PCs is estimated to be around 480 million kg, which is equal to the weight of 320,000 cars.
Although many of these PC OS support may remain functional for many years after the end of OS support, Canalis warned that the lack of security updates could reduce the demand for the device.
Microsoft’s plan involves providing security updates for Home Windows 10 devices by October 2028 with an unknown annual fee. Canalis suggested that if the pricing structure for extended Windows 10 support follows previous trends, migrating to the new PC can be more cost effective, leaving more old PCs.
Microsoft aims to close support for Home Windows 10 by October 2025. The next generation, Home Windows 11 to PC is expected to introduce advanced artificial intelligence technology, which can potentially work to bring back the dull PC market back on track.
The report reported that the hard drives used in personal computer and data storage servers are recycled to extract materials for use in electric vehicle motors and renewable power generations.
