LG has introduced its latest stretchable display prototype to the world, giving a new twist to the definition of flexible display, which comes in 12-inch size, but can be expanded up to 50 percent, which means that it can be pulled to 18-inch. The company says that even after stretching on full capacity, the display keeps a high resolution of 100 pixels per inch. In addition, it is capable of showing full RGB color in its maximum stretch.
LG Show described it as the company’s “ultimat display technology”. Currently the definition of flexible display in the market is one or a maximum of two foldable displays, which we have seen in the existing foldable smartphones. However, it is a revolution in many ways to enlarge the display by pulling like rubber. LG Show says that it can be used in various industry including “fashion, wearables, mobility and gaming”. According to the company, it can also get a place in the automobile and aviation industry.
LG Show initially showed this display technology in 2020, when it was only 20 percent stretchable. At that time the company had told that the quality of the panel is similar to 40-inch 4K TV equipped with 100ppi pixel density.
LG Show has claimed that the prototype may withstand frequent stretch up to 10,000 times. In addition, the display uses only 40 micrometer measuring micro-LED light sources. It is also said to be able to face excessive temperature or external shock etc.
LG Show says that the display is made on a special silicon substrate that is also used for contact lenses. It has micro-LED which is directly connected through S-shape springs instead of wires to spread up to 50 percent without broken.
