The objective of this experiment done by ISRO was to discover sustainable agricultural practices in the space so that it can be used in long -term missions. That is, food and drink facilities can be provided to astronauts through farming in long space missions. Crops were developed by Vikram Sarabhai Space Center under which 8 seeds of cowpea were grown in controlled environment. During this time, the same circumstances were copied which can face astronaut missions.
ISRO shared a time lapse video on X. Three days ago, the seeds were reported to sprout. According to the report, cowpea was chosen for this experiment because it sprouts rapidly. This is a big success for ISRO because the possibilities of farming on other planets in future can be searched through it.
The environment in the spacecraft is a closed environment. In such a situation, the essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulfur are required to increase cowpea. These help in plant growth in microgravity. According to scientists, plants in microgravity change their growth pattern. For example, the development of the stem and root may change here. Plants can grow in all directions in space than the earth.
