Reuters had sent questions to the spokespersons of these three companies through the Kindle app about the access of pornographic content and the ability of the users to see it. These companies say that their apprehensions were related to the violations of the policy. However, these companies have not given much information about the violations of their rules and the warning given to Amazon. Reuters were told by two families about this problem. These families said that their children had downloaded pornographic content through Amazon’s unlimited e-book subscription service. These families refused to express their identity.
In this regard, Amazon has told Reuters in a statement, “We are committed to giving a safe experience of shopping and reading to our customers and their families and we take such matters seriously. We are all reviewing the available information and action will be taken based on our conclusions.” Referring to Amazon, Apple said, “We have informed the developer of these apprehensions and we are working with them to ensure their adherence to our guidelines.”
Google said in a statement, “Google Play does not allow apps to keep or promote pornographic content. We are in touch with developer on this issue.” Such warnings are rarely seen among tech companies. These companies compete among themselves as well as depend on each other for many services. Amazon and Kindle Apps are among the most downloaded apps on Google and Apple’s app stores. Global e-book distributor Amazon has a major stake in this market. E-books can also be read on Kindle’s mobile app besides Kindle’s devices.
