Former manager of Twitter jailed in America for spying for Saudi Arabia

A former manager of the microblogging site Twitter has been sentenced to 3.5 years in jail in the US for being found guilty of spying for Saudi Arabia. After hearing in a San Francisco court, the jury found the person guilty of spying on with bribe from Saudi Arabia officials.

The case started about eight years ago when Ahmad Abouammo took bribe from Saudi Arabia officials to help them in connivance with journalists and celebrities in Middle East and Africa. He had given sensitive information about Twitter to Saudi Arabia officials so that he could reach his interested Twitter users. The lawyers who advocate Abouammo have not commented on this. Twitter has also not said anything on this matter. Billionaire Elon Musk has recently taken Twitter takeover. Since then, he has been making major changes in the company. Musk has started efforts to remove bots and spam accounts from Twitter. Users have been constantly complaining about spam on Twitter.

Prosecutors had reported in the court that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s advisor Bader Al Asker appointed Abouammo to get information about some Twitter accounts access and Saudi rebels. These accounts also included a handle of @mujtahidd, causing corruption and other allegations against Saudi Arabia’s royal family. This handle had millions of followers. Prosecutors said Abouammo was given a luxury watch of about $ 20,000 in addition to about three million dollars.

The amount was transferred by Abouammo to his account in America after depositing an account of one of his relatives in Lebanon. However, his lawyers argued what he did on Twitter was part of his work. Abouammo has been convicted of accusations of fraud, money laundering and conspiracy. Even before this, there have been some allegations of spying on Saudi Arabia. However, most of them survived due to lack of strong evidence in most of these.
