According to the French news agency (by Way of NDTV), the AMI newspaper Publication Association of Spain claims that Meta is engaged in “systematic” extraction of personal data from users on its platforms from May 2028 to July 2023. According to the trial, this process of platform violates the rules of the European Union that forces companies to obtain the consent of users for use in advertisements.
The lawsuit argued that due to the works of Meta, there was an unfair competition in the advertising market. By offering the perfect advertisements received from “illegally obtained” data, the US technical giant received competitive advantage by violating the European Union’s data privacy laws. The report further states that El Pais publishers PRISA and ABC owner Vocento are part of the major Spanish media companies, including Vocento.
The Chairman of the AMI, Jose Jolie, said that Meta has established its main position in the advertising market by disregarding the rules on personal data security, causing the Spanish media to face major damage and their stability was endangered.
