Prime Minister Modi’s two -day visit to America started from Wednesday. Sources who are aware of this told Reuters that the meeting between Modi and Musk may include a delay in the launch of Starlink’s satellite broadband service in India. A source said that Musk agreed to assure India on the apprehensions about security. This includes local storage of data. In this regard, Prime Minister Modi’s office and Starlink did not answer the request sent for comments.
Recently, a media report quoted sources as saying that Starlink has formally agreed for the conditions related to data interception by the Government of Telecom Department (DOT). In order to obtain this service license in the country, all companies have to accept these conditions. The report said that Starlink had requested to give exemption in certain conditions till the application for this was approved, but the government refused to give any exemption to foreign companies. No foreign company has been licensed for satellite internet service by DOT.
Starlinks in the country may get a competition with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. Both these telecom companies also plan to launch this service. This spectrum can be allocated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (DOT) in the next few months. Recently Bharti Enterprises reported that it is ready to start the satellite telecom service. She is waiting for the approval of the central government for this service. The company had said that two of its stations are ready in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
