Amap, one of China’s leading navigation platforms, has officially launched its first English-language map targeting foreign users, ITHome reports. The move will reportedly make travel to China more accessible for non-Chinese speakers. Apart from this, the app developer believes that this will also boost the tourism industry.
Currently, the English map is in the beta testing phase and is only available to foreign users based in China. The report states that on iOS devices, the app includes a language setting function, but the English option is showing a greyed out button, with a message – “The system is not yet supported.” Amap has clarified that this feature is still being tested and will be gradually implemented in the coming time. The app versions available on Google Play games and App Pack also show Chinese language by default.
Amap’s appeal extends far beyond navigation. With a peak of 280 million daily active users during the 2023 Mid-Autumn Festival, the platform provides real-time traffic updates, electric vehicle charging station locations, restaurant reservations, and leisure travel assistance. Its integration with Alibaba’s ecosystem, connecting with platforms like Alipay, Fliggy, Ele.me and Koubei, makes it a one-stop solution for users looking for local services, food delivery, travel recommendations and hotel booking.
