The Alliance of Digital India Foundation (ADIF) and its members have filed complaints against Google’s billing system. The CCI had directed Google to provide third party payment options. Before pleading with the court, the petitioners had filed several complaints in the CCI but they were not heard.
About 97 percent of the 60 million smartphones in the country run on Android. This figure is about 75 percent for about 55 crore smartphones in Europe. The CCI had imposed a fine of about $ 16.1 million in October last year for misusing its dominated situation in Android market on Google -running American company, Alphabet. The CCI also asked the company to change the way the market marketing its Android system in the country. The CCI had directed the company that it should not impose any condition on the app developers which are unfair or discriminated against.
Shark Tank India Judge and businessman Anupam Mittal termed Google’s billing system as “illegal” and described Alphabet as ‘Digital East India Company’. He said that Google has violated the laws of the country. Along with this, Mittal hoped that the issue will be given attention by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Google was earlier accused of violating the Competition Commission of India (CCI) order and charging up to 11-26 percent from the app developers who selected the alternative billing system. Recently, Google had changed its policy. Service fees will also have to be paid if you choose Google’s alternative billing system. However, it will be four percent lower than standard fees.
