According to WABETAINFO, this feature is currently being developed, which may take a few months to arrive. The report states that the conversation through unique username will also be safe with end-to-end encryption i.e. no third information other than two users will be able to achieve.

In the present time, users have to share their mobile number to login to WhatsApp. However, many social media apps and messaging apps connect people even without mobile number.
