Twitter Competitor Koo To Close Unwell because of Monetary Illness

The social media app Koo is being closed. This Indian startup started about four years ago to compete with micro -blogging platform Twitter (now called X). It will be discontinued after the negotiations on actions with large internet and media companies fail.

Koo was started by APRAMEYA RADHAKRISNA and Mayank Bidawatka. It used to serve users in the languages of the country. Aprameya and Bidawatka said in a post on Linkedin on Wednesday that KOO will be closed after the conversation with some big internet companies, business groups and media companies failed. A report by Techcrunch in February claimed that KOO was having talks with Bangalore’s news and content aggregator Dailyhunt.

Its founders have reported that some companies had changed their priority when the KOO deals were in the final round and most of these companies did not want to deal with user generated content. This app had about one crore monthly active users and about 21 lakh active users in their peak era. KOO’s popularity increased rapidly when there was tension between the central government and Twitter about the requests to remove the content. About two years ago, KOO crossed the figure of five crore users. It had targeted to overtake Twitter’s user base within a year. The number of Twitter users has increased rapidly over the years.

There was a lack of a big difficult funding for this startup. Aprameya said that KOO needed long-term funding to increase the number of users before acquiring revenue. He said that the cost of running this social media app is a big reason behind the decision to close KOO. KOO made his algorithm public about two years ago. Its founders say that they are considering continuing this service to enable social media in indigenous languages.
