A media report quoted TM ROH, President of the company’s mobile division, as saying that Samsung is preparing for manufacturing its laptops in the country. Last year, the central government approved the Rs 17,000 crore incentive production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme 2.0 to promote manufacturing of IT hardware like laptops and tablets in the country. American company Apple, which has a large stake in the premium smartphone market, has also planned to increase manufacturing in India. The company is preparing to shift a large part of its manufacturing in China to India. Last year, Apple also opened two retail stores in the country. These stores are getting good response. A large number of Apple suppliers are in China and the company plans to reduce its dependence on China. Apple started manufacturing iPhones in the country in 2017.
Another big company HP making computer devices has also partnered with technology company Google to make Chromebook laptops in the country. Chromebooks will be built at the factory near Chennai in HP’s Tamil Nadu. The company has been manufacturing desktops and laptops for almost three years in this factory. ‘Make in India’ is being promoted by the government. Because of this, many global technology companies are setting up their units in the country or are exploring the possibility of partnership with Indian companies.
