However, the confirmation of the use of Pegasus was confirmed after WhatsApp prose in the NSO group. The use of Pegasus was suspected in a long -standing WhatsApp cyber attack which was first reported in 2019.
What’s pegasus and the way does it infect gadgets?
According to The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, which helped WhatsApp in the cyber attack investigations, Pegasus is the major spyware of the Israeli NSO group. It is believed that it is also known by other names like Q Suite and Trident. In the case of Whatsapp, Pegasas has said that it has used a vulnerability in WhatsApp Voip stack which is used to make video and audio calls. Just a missed call on WhatsApp gave Pegasus access to the target device.
What can pegasus do?
Pegasus is a versatile piece of spyware and as soon as it is installed on the device of the target, it starts contacting the control server, which can then relay the command to collect data from the infected device. Pegasus can steal information like password, contacts, text messages, calendar details and even a voice calls made using messaging apps. In addition, it can also spy using the phone’s camera and microphone as well as GPS to track live location.
Who used to be hacked the usage of pegasus in bharat?
The details of how many people in India were hacked using Pegasus through WhatsApp are not clear. However, the WhatsApp spokesperson confirmed the Gadgets 360 that Indian users were among those who contacted the company during the May 2019 cyber attack.
WhatsApp wrote in a blog post, “We sent a special WhatsApp message to about 1,400 users, which we have to be influenced by the (May 2019) attack, sent to inform them directly.”
Whatsapp owned by FB has also not said anything about who was behind cyber attacks and illegal espionage. The NSO Group has also denied any wrongdoing and the company claims that it only sells spyware to “tested and valid government agencies”.
