A report shared with a news agency states that a group named Global Witness submitted 8 paid ads to Facebook for approval. Each of them included versions of abusive language against Rohingya. Facebook approved to publish all 8 advertisements. Although the group withdrew them before posting or paying advertisements, it shows that despite its promises, Facebook fails to find out the callers on its platform.
Following the Rohingya rebel group attack, Myanmar’s army launched a clearance campaign in Rakhine State of Western Myanmar in 2017. After this, more than 7 lakh Rohingya fled to Bangladesh. As part of this campaign, security forces were accused of gang rape, murders and setting fire in thousands of houses.
On 1 February last year, Myanmar’s army forcibly captured the country. The democratically elected leaders were put in jail there. This occupation has been condemned by Rohingya Muslims who have taken refuge in Bangladesh. People say that they are afraid to return to Myanmar.
Experts say that such advertisements have been visible and Facebook has still not been able to take concrete steps despite his promises of doing better and assurance of taking their role seriously in the massacre. He should ensure that such advertisements should not be given a place on a platform like Facebook, in which Rohingya is the use of abusive language calling for the murder of Muslims.
