Microsoft has admitted that around 250 million (25 crore) of customers’ service records have been in danger due to “internal customer aid database misunderstanding”. These records included data of conversation in case of support case between customers and Microsoft employees around the world. All Microsoft customers’ data was left open and could be accessed with a web browser. This data could have access this data without a password or without any authentication. The lapse was first reported by Bob Diachnco’s Commercetech Security Research Team.

In Microsoft, the corporate vice -president, Cyberspace Solutions Group has obeyed the mistake in the statement on the lapse and also assured that no person’s personal data has been utilized in it. The investigation conducted by Microsoft found that the change made on 5 December 2019 in the database’s network security group was accidentally imposed a wrong security rule, which made the data openly available. The company says that this omission has been fixed on 31 December 2019 and the database has now been made safe.

This record included a log file of conversation held at intervals from 2005 to December 2019 i.e. 14 years. The company apologized to all the users and learned from this mistake and also assured not to have such a lapse in the future. The company has also thanked Bob Diachnco for helping to correct this mistake.

This is not the first lapse related to Microsoft’s data security. Earlier in 2013, the hackers made a dent in the company’s secret database. This database kept a record of information tracking the problem in the company’s software. After this, between January to March 2019, hackers hacked the account of a Microsoft support agent. Apart from this, the company has also considered the possibility of a dent in data of some outlook users earlier.
